FOOD BUYING TIPS: Be a Smart Grocery Shopper
When I was a kid I used to accompany my mother when she goes to the supermarket to buy our weekly groceries. Up until now, I still come with her because I really enjoy pushing carts and looking for food items or whatever there is inside the supermarket. I feel happy whenever I see all the products stocked perfectly on its shelf. It’s just amazing to see. Now that I am a grown up, my mom asks me to buy groceries for us since she is also busy with her work and all other things in our house and I happily accept to buy our groceries. She always gives me a long list of stuffs to buy so that I will not be able to forget something. The list has always descriptions of the product and sometimes I’ll be shocked to see that the descriptions will be so exact and specific. I will tell myself that she really is certified smart grocery shopper.

Start your grocery shopping with canned and dry foods and then go to the refrigerated foods and lastly the fresh produce and deli section.
Most grocery stores are designed with the deli, fresh breads and produce sections near the front of the store by the main entrance. This tends to be where many of us start our shopping, but items that need to be refrigerated should be the last items you place in your grocery cart. The least amount of time out of refrigeration, the better the chance you have to keep the items fresh and in proper shape. The best rule of thumb is to start with non-refrigerated items, then refrigerated items, then frozen items. |
To get the best deals on fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables, stick to in-season products and shop the local farmer's markets
To consistently get the best price on fruits and vegetables, stick with the products that are in season and shop your local farmer's or open markets. Grocery stores, even the big superstores, will carry out-of-season products that are often over priced, over sprayed with chemicals, and go bad quickly. Farmer's markets sell fresh, in-season products that are generally of higher quality and at better prices than the supermarkets. |
